BE UNDAMMED, REMOVE BOUNDARIES, RIDE FREE!

Deep in the ocean, a free diver drifts past borders and beasts, a Zuni map artist recenter's the world with water colour, a young kayaker comes a-cropper in the Grand Canyon, and Robert Macfarlane voices the course of the River Dee over forest and fell.

One Breath Around the World

GUILLAUME NÉRY / Swim / Adventure

In their new short film, One Breath Around the World, French apnea champion Guillaume Néry and Julie Gautier take viewers on an underwater odyssey across the globe. Shooting in locations from Mauritius to Mexico to Japan and many stops in between, Néry and Gautier draw on their extensive experience to explore submerged ruins, swim beneath a thick sheet of ice, mingle with a pod of sleeping sperm whales.

(Des)Equilibrados

OTÁVIO LIMA / Slacklining / Culture

The unbalanced walk on a thin line between trees in the Amazon forest is a unique experience. Either up on the highest tree or across a river bank, highline starts when you focus, stand up, breath and find your balance.

Counter Mapping

EMMANUEL VAUGHAN-LEE & ADAM LOFTEN / Culture / Environment

Jim Enote, a traditional Zuni farmer and director of the A:shiwi A:wan Museum and Heritage Center, is working with Zuni artists to create maps that bring an indigenous voice and perspective back to the land, countering Western notions of place and geography and challenging the arbitrary borders imposed on the Zuni world.

How NOT to Capture the Grand Canyon

MAX ROMEY / Paddle

What a young (over confident) videographer learned while trying to capture the Grand Canyon from a boat.

Creek Sessions

TAHRIA SHEATHER / Culture / Environment

Nature has a rhythm – it just takes one to tune into it. Jess Kilroy – musician, climber and conservationist – travels to wilderness areas around the West creating music from the natural sounds she finds there, with the goal of sparking people's love for these wild lands.

Upstream

ROB PETIT / Culture / Environment

Upstream is a new film by the writer Robert Macfarlane and the director Rob Petit. The film, which is shot entirely from the air, follows the course of the River Dee in Scotland all the way to its source in the Cairngorm mountains, the highest of any river in Britain. Eerie, hypnotic and experimental with an original score by the Oscar-nominated Hauschka, this is a journey into wildness, winter and strangeness.

Film Tickets

For 2019, due to popular demand, we’ve swapped our day film passes to individual film session tickets. This gives you full flexibility of our programme, so you can choose the exact sessions you’d like to see. More info on this decision here.

Accessibility

We're working hard to make our Festival fully accessible, and there are dedicated spaces reserved for wheelchair users in our venues with the exception of the Fleece Inn. Unfortunately within the Fleece Inn the cinema space is situated on an upper floor with no lift access. To ensure nobody misses out on the action, all film screenings held at the Fleece Inn, will also be held at other venues. For more information head to Festival Accessibility.

THANKS TO PERTEX

OUR FILM PROGRAMME PRESENTING PARTNER

If you're wearing a lightweight, high-performance windproof or waterproof mountain garment, there's a good chance it'll be constructed using Pertex fabrics. Founded in 1979 near Burnley, the company has steadily grown from humble beginnings into an iconic fabric technology brand, creating technical fabrics mainly used in garments and sleeping bags.  Being so close to its outdoor users, Pertex has increasingly chosen to communicate stories through the medium of film. Its six-part series Elemental Journeys explores stories from people whose lives are defined by wild spaces and mountain adventures. At Kendal, we're proud that Pertex is the presenting sponsor of our International Film Competition.
