WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN?

A Siberian highliner tiptoes above ice water to find her shamanic vision, London ‘lads' find solace in cold water in the city, a pastor herds his philosophy running high in the Faroes, Hazel Findlay climbs solo in a North Wales playground, and the elders and youth of native Wyoming tribes find ritual spirit through skateboarding.

Portal

MIKHAIL LINNIKOV / Highlining / Culture

Filmed in March 2019, during an expedition to the island of Olkhon, a slackliner ventures over Lake Baikal across a 62 meter line at an altitude of 100 meters! Lake Baikal since ancient times is considered a sacred place and a place of power for Siberian shamans. This short film tells how the state of mind of a tightrope Walker walking on a tight rope and a shaman in a state of ritual trance are connected.

The Running Pastor

BEN STARK / Running / Culture

A story about Sverri Steinholm, a Faroese trail running pastor. Sverri is an avid runner — both on the roads and ‘in the fields’ as he says — who uses his time on the trails to work through not only his personal conflicts, but the conflicts of others he often is burdened to bear being the local Pastor who must keep everyone’s secrets.

The Postman

Sam Needham

Clinging to the frayed edges of the ragged shores of the Isle of Harris, a singletrack path navigates its way above cliffs, around bays. Three friends make the trip to not only ride the Postman’s Path to Rhenigidale, but find out more about its history.

Scenes from a Dry City

FRANCOIS VERSTER & SIMON WOOD/ Environment

In South Africa, an impending water crisis grips an entire town.

The Home for Broken Toys

HOLLY BUTCHER / Swim

Every weekend through the winter, a group of middle-aged men, who dub themselves the East German Ladies Swimming Team, plunge into the freezing waters of a pond in central London. 'The Home for Broken Toys' follows the team through one season to explore their motivations for braving the extreme cold each week, a decision which seems alien to the filmmaker. The reasons she discovers are by turns comedic, poignant, and profound.

Good Medicine

JACKSON TISI / Skateboarding / Culture

Filmed on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming, Good Medicine is a short film looking at how the youth and elders of the Shoshone and Arapaho Tribes find peace and healing through skateboarding and tradition.

Free Flow

PAUL DIFFLEY / Climb

Hazel Findlay enjoys an epic day of mountain running and solo climbing in the Welsh mountains of Snowdonia. Stunning shots combine with a considered soundtrack and introspection from one of the world’s best rock climbers.

Spirit

JANE DYSON & ROSS HARRISON / Cultural

An intimate story of longing and belonging in India’s sacred mountains, ‘Spirit’ explores what it takes to make a home in a remote community in the thralls of change.

Film Tickets

For 2019, due to popular demand, we’ve swapped our day film passes to individual film session tickets. This gives you full flexibility of our programme, so you can choose the exact sessions you’d like to see. More info on this decision here.

Accessibility

We're working hard to make our Festival fully accessible, and there are dedicated spaces reserved for wheelchair users in our venues with the exception of the Fleece Inn. Unfortunately within the Fleece Inn the cinema space is situated on an upper floor with no lift access. To ensure nobody misses out on the action, all film screenings held at the Fleece Inn, will also be held at other venues. For more information head to Festival Accessibility.
